Christantus Uche Fuels Comfortable Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the knockout stages, especially following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season proved outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Control Asserted from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
